MetroAction Announces Small Business Award Winners
May 25, 2010
–
MetroAction hosted more than 200 business
leaders at its Annual Small Business Awards Luncheon at the
Hilton
Scranton & Conference Center this afternoon. Awards were presented
to recognize the dedication, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit
displayed by small businesses in northeastern Pennsylvania.
This year’s event
featured the presentation of six awards, including a new addition
for 2010- the Volunteer of the Year. Award winners included:
·
Small Business of the Year
-
Springbrook Kennels
“Small businesses are
the cornerstone of our economy, not just in northeastern
Pennsylvania but throughout the country,” said MetroAction
president, Natalie O’Hara. “It is entrepreneurs who are designing
our newest technologies, improving how we work and how we live,
employing the most people, and who are contributing to and
reinvesting in our communities. Small businesses are our future,
and this award brings that to light.”
In all, numerous
companies were nominated in each category. Criteria upon which the
nominees were judged included performance, growth, innovation,
creativity, competitiveness, community involvement and more. The
Small Business Awards Luncheon is a program of MetroAction, which
exists to assist our small businesses in their growth, development
and success and to recognize achievements and contributions of area
entrepreneurs.
The luncheon also
featured a keynote address by Pennsylvania Treasurer Rob McCord.
“Most leaders know that small
businesses are the backbone of Pennsylvania communities,” notes
McCord. “They are good neighbors, good investments, and good
employers. My objective as State Treasurer is to increase the
economic security and prosperity of all Pennsylvanians. And one of
the smartest ways to do that is to invest in our small businesses.
The Pennsylvania Treasury is now developing several programs
targeting start ups and entrepreneurs, including a Women & Money
Project and a Micro-Lending Investment Initiative. It is a pleasure
for me to address the Chamber and the Scranton businesses community
today as we honor the award winners and celebrate their
accomplishments.”

GREATER SCRANTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE:
On Tuesday October 28, 2008 at The Greater Scranton Chamber of
Commerce Annual Membership Luncheon attended by over 300 people Springbrook
Kennels was awarded one of 5 top awards given by the Chamber on an annual
basis. Membership in this Chamber Chapter consists of 2,109 businesses.
Scranton, Pennsylvania - The Greater
Scranton
Chamber of Commerce Pride and Progress Awards
Since 1975, the Chamber has recognized Lackawanna County's public and
private sector operations for upgrading their establishments, improving the
appearance of their respective neighborhoods, and beautifying the region.
Presentations are made in the categories of:
* New
Construction - The facility must respond to the
surrounding
character of its respective neighborhood.
*
Exterior Design
*
Interior Renovations
*
Landscape and Site Design
*
Community Pride
Judging Criteria: The facility
must be located within The Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce
jurisdiction. The structure must be a commercial or public building. The
facility must have been renovated, constructed, or landscaped within the
last two years. The construction or renovation of private residences is
ineligible.
On behalf of Springbrook Kennels, Michael
Williamson, the Owner & Operator, completed an entry form for the New
Construction, a brief project description, and before and after
photographs. Michael also requested that at least one member of the Chamber
staff visit the facility so that they could truly appreciate the new
construction that was completed for the boarding of dogs. Springbrook
Kennels replaced a 25 year old 1,600 sq ft indoor/outdoor kennel building
with a nearly 5,000 sq ft all indoor state of the art building with 50 new
Mason Kennels with resting benches & privacy panels, Aco drains, SMT power
wash system with remote stations, specially designed 2 zone heat and
air-conditioning, 8 zone radiant heated floors, energy recovery units for
24/7 recirculation of air, and stereo music all to support a healthy, clean,
soothing, and friendly environments for their guests.
Michael and his wife Brenda were thrilled to
receive this award as it has never been given to a Kennel before and it
proves that even small businesses have a chance to win recognition when
competing with those that may have much larger budgets for new
construction. Having been in the Boarding, Grooming, and Training business
for just 4 1/2 years has been a very satisfying and fulfilling experience
for both Michael and Brenda.
